FARM'S STORY

Mālamalama Farm & Center, led by Sylvia Cenzano, utilizes low-input permaculture methods on the lush and steep slopes of lower Haiku. For nearly two decades, Sylvia has nurtured a regenerative agroforestry system, where native wisdom meets modern sustainability. The farm yields a diverse array of tropical crops— including mountain apple, soursop, jackfruit, bananas, lilikoi, avocados, cinnamon —which Sylvia and her team transform into value-added products like fruit leathers. With these creations, there is a special focus on supporting fire survivors and food-insecure residents on Maui. Beyond farming, Mālamalama is a thriving educational space and the team there provides 'Emerging Leaders' structured programs for young adults, single mothers, and women, offering them hands-on learning in sustainable agriculture, entrepreneurship, permaculture design, food sovereignty, and personal development. These educational opportunities create a safe space for personal growth and skill development. The farm’s roadside stand brings tropical fruits and flowers directly to the public. Mālamalama's farm activities are conducted in conjunction with Kolealea Agricultural Center, the farm owned by Sylvia Cenzano. Through this work, Sylvia and her team are cultivating not only food, but general empowerment, resilience, economic growth, and a brighter future for the island.
